What are Toxic Plants?

There are so many beautiful plants with wonderful uses and correspondences that you may want to add to your garden or home, however many people don’t know that certain plants can be harmful or even deadly to the furry members of your family!

In science, a toxin is often considered a specific type of poison – a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms. Some scientists, though, refer to toxins as they would any poison and call those toxins that have a living source ‘biotoxins’ or ‘natural toxins’.

It is up to you if you wish to still include these plants in your home or garden, but try to keep them out of mouth-range for hungry critters! Keep an eye on leaves for potential damage, and know what to do in case your animal has eaten something harmful. Here is a helpful guide on detecting poisoning for dogs, and here is one for cats. In the case that you think your animal might be poisoned, contact poison control or call your nearest emergency vet.

To simplify things for both you and me I’m using a key to show which plants are harmful to which species of animal and which ones can be particularly hazardous!
